Battle of RC4 (Dông Khê – Cao Bằng)
Summary
The Battle of RC4 is one of the heaviest defeats of the French army in Indochina: the evacuation of Cao Bằng turned into a debacle in the mountainous jungle, with French columns annihilated in a series of ambushes and sieges at Dông Khê and along RC4. This catastrophe opened the way to the Việt Minh's conquest of northern Tonkin.
Historical context
After several years of attrition, the Việt Minh, strengthened by the communist victory in China, launched a decisive offensive to control the Sino-Vietnamese border. The French high command ordered the withdrawal from Cao Bằng, but the operation turned into a trap. The battalions were encircled and crushed in hostile terrain.
Tactics
The Việt Minh practiced systematic ambush, cut supply routes, stormed isolated strongpoints, and harassed marching columns. French relief attempts failed, and aviation could evacuate only a minority of the wounded.
Consequences
A French military catastrophe, RC4 sounded the end of French dominance over northern Tonkin, accelerated American aid, and heralded the phase of total war that would lead to Điện Biên Phủ.
