Battle of Vertières

The Battle of Vertières was the last major engagement of the Haitian War of Independence. French forces, weakened by prolonged fighting and disease, were defeated by the Haitian insurgent army led by Dessalines. This defeat led to the final surrender of French troops and marked the end of French colonial presence in Saint-Domingue.

After several years of conflict, France sought to retain its most profitable colony. The war had become a symbol of the struggle against slavery and for freedom. Vertières was the decisive battle that sealed the colony's future.

Dessalines used guerrilla tactics combined with coordinated frontal attacks, exploiting knowledge of the terrain and the high motivation of his troops. The French, exhausted and demoralized, could not contain the pressure.

The French defeat led to the proclamation of Haitian independence in January 1804, the first independent Black republic, and the definitive end of French colonial domination in the Americas.
