Battle of Solferino

Modern Era French victory
Historical significance:

Summary

The Battle of Solferino was one of bloodiest engagements of nineteenth-century Europe. It opposed Franco-Sardinian troops led by Napoleon III and Victor Emmanuel II to imperial Austrian army of Francis Joseph. Fighting extended over vast front between villages of Solferino, Cavriana, and San Martino, turning into bloody chaos of infantry, cavalry, and artillery. French victory, won at cost of heavy losses, would profoundly mark consciences and lead to creation of Red Cross.

Historical context

Battle formed part of Second Italian War of Independence, where Napoleon III supported Kingdom of Sardinia against Austrian Empire to liberate Lombardy. After victories at Palestro and Magenta allied armies advanced southward. Emperor Francis Joseph personally took command of troops for decisive counterattack. Engagement of 24 June began without clear plan, each army discovering other's presence as advance proceeded.

Tactics

Battlefield extended over 15 km without real overall plan. At Solferino French army engaged Austrian center in series of frontal assaults supported by artillery. Mac Mahon directed right wing and repulsed enemy at Cavriana while Piedmontese left wing fought fiercely at San Martino. Crushing heat, exhaustion, and confusion transformed battle into carnage. At nightfall Austrians retreated abandoning field to Franco-Sardinians.

Consequences

Victory at Solferino sealed end of Lombardy campaign. Austria ceded region to France, which then transferred it to Kingdom of Sardinia. This triumph allowed major advance in Italian unification process. However horror of carnage—40,000 killed or wounded in total—disturbed Napoleon III and European opinion. Swiss Henri Dunant, witness to suffering of abandoned wounded, founded Red Cross and campaigned for first Geneva Conventions. Solferino thus became battle both military and humanitarian.
