Historical context

In May 1859 France allied with Kingdom of Sardinia against Austria to support Italian unification. As Austrian forces advanced in Lombardy, French division commanded by Forey encountered Austrian corps at Montebello. Though numerically inferior, French held position and managed to reverse balance of forces. This battle marked beginning of land engagements between France and Austria in this war.

Tactics

Forey skillfully disposed troops around Montebello and awaited Austrian assault. Despite numerical inferiority French used mobile artillery and light cavalry to destabilize enemy lines. Forey launched several counterattacks, notably with zouaves, repulsing Austrians after fierce combat in village streets. Coordination between infantry and artillery proved decisive.

Forey gained immediate recognition and Piedmontese could advance more confidently northward. It also prepared decisive victories at Palestro, Magenta, and Solferino in following weeks.
