Second Battle of the Strait of Otranto

Contemporary Era French victory
Historical significance:

Summary

On 2 October 1918, a Franco-British-Italian squadron intercepted a nocturnal sortie by two Austro-Hungarian torpedo boats attempting to disrupt the Adriatic blockade at the entrance to the Strait of Otranto. French vessels opened fire with precision, supported by British destroyers. One torpedo boat was sunk, the other forced to retreat. This action confirmed Allied naval supremacy in the Adriatic a few weeks before Austro-Hungarian capitulation.

Historical context

Since 1915, the Strait of Otranto has been a strategic lock between the Adriatic and the Mediterranean, guarded by the French, Italian, and British navies. The Austro-Hungarian Empire regularly launched raids there against blockade lines. In October 1918, as the political situation in Austria-Hungary deteriorated rapidly, the fleet attempted a final action to contest Allied control. French destroyers were on constant alert and actively participated in surveillance of the sector.

Tactics

The Allied squadron patrolled in extended formation to maximise radar and visual coverage. When enemy activity was detected, French vessels manoeuvred rapidly in coordination with the British to intercept the targets. Thanks to a pincer manoeuvre, the torpedo boats were caught in crossfire. Speed of execution and Allied technical superiority were decisive. The battle lasted less than 30 minutes but illustrates the effectiveness of inter-Allied naval cooperation.

Consequences

This naval victory further undermined the morale of the Austro-Hungarian navy, already weakened by desertions and the political disintegration of the empire. It confirmed total Allied domination of the Adriatic Sea, preventing any resupply or evacuation by sea. The engagement contributed indirectly to Austro-Hungarian surrender at the end of October. On the French side, this battle reinforced the prestige of the national navy in a secondary but strategic theatre.
