Battle of the Chernaya

Modern Era French victory
Historical significance:

Summary

The Battle of the Chernaya opposed numerous but poorly coordinated Russian army to solidly established Franco-Piedmontese defensive line. Russians, in desperate attempt to break Sevastopol siege, crossed Chernaya River to attack allied positions. Forewarned, French of General Bosquet and Sardes of Durando resisted fiercely and inflicted heavy defeat on assailants. This battle confirmed collapse of Russian offensive strategy in peninsula.

Historical context

In August 1855 as Sevastopol siege dragged on, Russians launched last attempt to force allied line and supply city. General Gorchakov prepared large-scale attack on Chernaya banks southeast of Sevastopol against French and Piedmontese positions. But well-entrenched Allies anticipated offensive. Battle was also major test for Sardinian forces recently integrated in coalition. Their tenacious resistance alongside French was strong political symbol favoring Italian unity.

Tactics

Russians attempted to cross Chernaya on two main bridges but were met with heavy French artillery fire. Russian attacks, poorly synchronized, ran into well-structured allied defense. Piedmontese held Traktir hill firmly, strategic point of battlefield. French counterattacks directed by Bosquet repulsed Russian outflanking attempts. Marshy terrain and Russian command errors amplified their disorganization. Allies, tactically superior, won clear victory.

Consequences

Battle marked definitive failure of Russians to loosen stranglehold on Sevastopol. It reinforced military cooperation between France and Kingdom of Sardinia, contributing to establish French influence in Italy. Militarily it again illustrated allied superiority in coordination and artillery. This defeat accelerated Russian discouragement and announced imminent fall of Sevastopol, which would fall few weeks later. Politically it strengthened French diplomatic position in upcoming negotiations.
