Battle of Tamasint

Contemporary Era French victory
Historical significance:

Summary

On 17 February 1923, French troops launched an offensive toward the Tamasint massif in order to break Rifian lines threatening the Ketama road. The operation, carefully prepared, was one of the most structured since the beginning of the conflict. The assault met fierce defence, but superiority of fire and decisive use of artillery enabled the French to win an important tactical victory. The battle secured the southern flank of French penetration into the Rif.

Historical context

Since the end of 1922, Abdelkrim had adopted a strategy of harassment on all fronts, notably in the south of the Rif where French forces were more vulnerable. Tamasint, a strategic point overlooking commercial valleys, was transformed into a stronghold by Rifian forces. The French general staff, anxious to maintain pressure and prevent a junction between rebel Rifian zones and other Moroccan tribes, decided to strike hard. The operation formed part of a more ambitious war of movement, begun in January.

Tactics

The attack was conducted at dawn, in three convergent columns from Ouezzane, with mountain artillery support and aerial bombardment. Legion infantry advanced slowly across rugged relief mined by the Rifians. Crossfire from the heights slowed the advance. An outflanking manoeuvre by alpine chasseurs finally disorganised the enemy command line. In late afternoon, the Rifians abandoned their positions and withdrew in disorder toward the heights of Bou Rhiou. The French took control of the massif.

Consequences

The victory at Tamasint had a major strategic effect: it stabilised the southern front and secured the supply axis toward Ketama, future base of operations for the great offensive of 1925. It also broke the morale of several local tribes allied to Abdelkrim, which began negotiations with French authorities. Militarily, it demonstrated that well-coordinated French troops could prevail in the Rif mountains. It also inaugurated a new phase of the war: that of large-scale operations and a stabilised front.
