Battle of Ky Hoa

Modern Era French victory
Historical significance:

Summary

The Battle of Ky Hoa was a decisive clash between Franco-Spanish forces and Vietnamese troops of the Nguyễn dynasty in southern Vietnam during the Cochinchina campaign. The siege of Saigon, maintained by the Vietnamese for nearly two years, culminated in this battle. Rear Admiral Charner, recently arrived with reinforcements, took the initiative for a frontal assault on the entrenched Vietnamese lines around the fortified village of Ky Hoa, southeast of Saigon.

Historical context

After the capture of Saigon in 1859 by Captain Rigault de Genouilly, French and Spanish troops found themselves encircled by thousands of Vietnamese soldiers. The Nguyễn imperial government attempted to retake the city without success. In February 1861, Charner arrived with an intervention force to break the siege. Ky Hoa was a strategic choke point, fortified with entrenchments, ditches, bamboo obstacles, and traps, defended by thousands of regular soldiers and local militiamen.

Tactics

Charner's plan relied on a double attack on the morning of 24 February: French troops attacked the southern front while the Spanish and naval infantry advanced from the east. After a day of fierce fighting, the Franco-Spanish forces took the first enemy lines. On 25 February, a general assault was launched against the central redoubt, supported by naval artillery positioned on the Saigon River. French troops carried the main position at the bayonet despite traps and the stubborn resistance of Nguyễn soldiers.

Consequences

The victory at Ky Hoa ended the siege of Saigon and marked a turning point in the conquest of Cochinchina. It allowed the French to extend their control in southern Vietnam. It was followed by negotiations that would lead to the official cession of three Cochinchinese provinces in 1862. Charner was acclaimed for his conduct, and the battle was commemorated as one of the first major French colonial victories in Asia.
