Battle of Hải Phòng

Contemporary Era French victory
Historical significance:

Summary

The Battle of Hải Phòng marked the opening of the Indochina conflict. After tensions over control of the port, an incident between customs officers and French soldiers and Việt Minh forces escalated into open fighting. The French high command ordered the complete capture of the city, and a massive naval artillery bombardment was launched. The street fighting was violent, causing destruction and heavy civilian casualties. The city was taken in less than a week, but the episode precipitated total war between France and the Việt Minh.

Historical context

At the end of the Second World War, France attempted to restore its authority in Indochina in the face of the rise of Vietnamese nationalism embodied by the Việt Minh. After fragile agreements in 1946, the situation deteriorated rapidly. Hải Phòng, a strategic port on the Gulf of Tonkin, became the main point of friction. A clash between a Chinese junk and French authorities triggered a major crisis.

Tactics

The French issued an ultimatum, then launched the operation with a massive naval bombardment of the port (cruiser Suffren, gunboat Chevreuil), followed by the entry of marine and Foreign Legion troops. The fighting took place street by street, with extensive use of light armor and mortars. The Việt Minh, entrenched in the working-class districts, mounted fierce defense before being overwhelmed or forced to retreat.

Consequences

The brutal capture of Hải Phòng sealed the definitive rupture between France and the Việt Minh. The event caused shock in Vietnam, radicalized the resistance, and convinced Hồ Chí Minh to prepare for total war. Internationally, the battle tarnished France's image, which was accused of bloody repression, and marked the official beginning of the First Indochina War (1946–1954).
