Summary

The Battle of Guastalla is a major confrontation between Franco-Sardinian forces and the Austrian army. Fighting takes place on the Po plain near Guastalla. After several hours of intense struggle, French troops, supported by their Sardinian allies, succeed in outflanking Austrian lines, inflicting heavy losses and forcing the enemy to retreat.

Historical context

Within the War of the Polish Succession, France supports the interests of the Duchy of Savoy and Stanisław Leszczyński against the Habsburgs. Guastalla is a strategic point for control of northern Italy.

Tactics

Pitched combat with infantry in line, cavalry charges on the flanks, intensive use of field artillery. Partial enveloping manoeuvres that disorganize Austrian forces.

Consequences
