Battle of the Selle

Contemporary Era French victory
Historical significance:

Summary

The battle of the Selle was a coordinated Allied operation, involving notably French and Australian troops, within the general pursuit of the German army after breakthrough of the Hindenburg Line. The objective was to cross the Selle River and reach Le Cateau. Fighting was fierce, notably around bridges and heights held by Germans offering strong resistance. The engagement was marked by excellent inter-Allied cooperation and overwhelming air and artillery superiority.

Historical context

After successes of September and early October 1918, Allied forces sought to maintain pressure and prevent German reorganization. The Selle River formed a natural defensive line the enemy used to slow progress. Allied command, with French support on the right flank, engaged a vast operation to cross the river, secure bridges, and advance toward the strategic bastion of Le Cateau.

Tactics

The assault began with intense artillery preparation, notably with very precise counter-battery fire and smoke cover. Infantry advanced at night to surprise defenders. French units crossed the river at several points despite heavy automatic weapons fire. Combined use of tanks, tactical aviation, and motorized patrols allowed outflanking of German lines. Franco-Australian coordination was exemplary, ensuring continuous push until capture of Le Cateau.

Consequences

Victory at the Selle opened the road to Valenciennes and brought the Allies closer to the Belgian border. The German defensive line was broken again, and the enemy was forced to retreat precipitately northeastward. This strategic success contributed directly to collapse of the German front in the following weeks. French involvement was significant and confirmed rising tactical and operational power of the French army at the end of the war.
