Era : Revolution & Empire
French defeat on 25 March 1799 at Stockach (Baden-Württemberg): Jourdan was beaten by Archduke Charles at the resumption of the Second Coalition War. Charles's decisive intervention and Austrian superiority forced the Army of the Danube to withdraw toward the Rhine.
On 25–26 September 1799, near Zurich, General Masséna won a major victory over Korsakov's Austro-Russian army, forcing the coalition to withdraw from Switzerland and retaking the city on 26 September.
French victory on 9 May 1800 at Biberach an der Riß (Swabia), where Gouvion Saint-Cyr defeated a corps of Kray's Austrian army two days after Messkirch. The clash, in Moreau's Bavarian campaign, pushed the Austrians back and prepared the French advance toward Ulm in the Second Coalition War.
The Battle of Elchingen, often called the Battle of Höchstädt, was a decisive victory for French forces under General Ney, breaking Austrian lines and renewing the offensive in southern Germany.
On 3 December 1800 in the Hohenlinden forest in Bavaria, General Moreau inflicted crushing defeat on Archduke John of Austria. In deep winter, 56,000 French ambushed in the woods defeated 64,000 Austrians engaged on a cleared road; Richepanse struck the enemy rear while Austrian center and wings were caught in a pincer.
On 14 June 1800 (25 Prairial Year VIII), near Alessandria in Piedmont, Bonaparte, then First Consul, reversed a surprise attack by Field Marshal Melas's Austrian army. After a difficult morning in which Victor and Lannes gave ground, Desaix's corps arrived and a late-day counterattack turned impending French defeat into decisive victory.
The Battle of Pozzolo was an important French victory that pushed Austrian forces beyond the Mincio and consolidated French domination in Lombardy. On 25 December 1800, after crossing the Mincio at Pozzolo and Monzambano, Dupont repelled Bellegarde; the same day, the Armistice of Steyr was signed north of the Alps.
The French expedition to Holland aimed to repel British and Russian coalition forces occupying the Batavian Republic. Moreau succeeded in restoring French control over the region.
