Battle of Tuléar (Toliara)
Summary
The Battle of Tuléar was the culmination of the 1967 independence revolt. French forces intervened massively to retake the town from the insurgents, during street fighting and sweeps in the outlying districts. The military repression restored order but stoked nationalist tensions.
Historical context
Madagascar, still under French influence despite official independence, experienced rising violence. Paris sent troops to protect its nationals and support the ruling regime during a flare-up of revolt in the south of the island.
Tactics
Coordinated assault on the town, heliborne insertions into the rear, district sweeps, use of light armored vehicles and mortars against insurgent strongpoints. The insurgents used barricades, snipers, and urban guerrilla tactics.
Consequences
A clear-cut military victory, order was restored. However, France was criticized for its interventionism and its brutal handling of the crisis. The battle accelerated Madagascar's distancing from French tutelage in the following years.
