Battle of Targuist
Summary
From 13 to 16 April 1926, French troops launched a major operation on Targuist, last active command centre of Abdelkrim in the central Rif. This battle followed the fall of Ajdir and the collapse of the Rifian defensive system. Fighting, very violent, was conducted in the enclosed valleys of the Rif, where elite Rifian troops offered fierce resistance. French aviation and tanks played a decisive role. The capture of Targuist opened the way to Abdelkrim's surrender a few weeks later.
Historical context
After the heavy defeats of autumn 1925, Abdelkrim's troops withdrew into the massifs of the central Rif. Targuist became their new command centre. For the French, it was a matter of ending the conflict militarily before it bogged down. Pétain planned a methodical encirclement operation, combining aviation, artillery, and mountain troops. It was also a race against time to prevent Abdelkrim from finding foreign support or opening a new front toward the east. Targuist was therefore the last strategic lock.
Tactics
The assault was launched at dawn on 13 April with aerial bombardment and 155 mm pounding. The land attack progressed on two axes: from the south by legionnaire units crossing the wadis, from the east by tirailleurs supported by FT tanks. The Rifians used the terrain with remarkable effectiveness, laying several ambushes. Moroccan goumiers operating as scouts neutralised sentries. On 15 April, main resistance collapsed. On the 16th, French forces entered the village and captured logistical depots.
Consequences
The battle of Targuist marked the effective end of organised military capacity of the Rifians. Abdelkrim no longer had a logistical base or centralised command structure. The French victory opened a wide breach in the central Rif and definitively isolated the last pockets of resistance. In the weeks that followed, several tribes surrendered. Abdelkrim himself gave himself up on 27 May 1926. The Rif War ended. Politically, this victory established Franco-Spanish colonial supremacy over northern Morocco and closed an intense sequence of anti-colonial war.
