Engagements around Höchstädt (1795)

In 1795, several skirmishes and engagements took place in the Höchstädt region between French and Austrian armies. These confrontations resulted in no decisive victory and ended in mutual withdrawals without significant territorial change.

These clashes formed part of the 1795 campaign in southern Germany, where both sides sought control of the Danube region without decisive success. Jourdan crossed the Rhine with the Army of Sambre-et-Meuse but, separated from Pichegru, faced Clerfayt maneuvering on his left flank after crossing the Main.

French and Austrian forces adopted defensive tactics and localized attacks without breaking enemy lines. Clerfayt surprised Jourdan in an exposed position at Höchst, near Frankfurt; an Austrian column took the French in flank and prevented dislodging the enemy despite the initial French attack.

The status quo was maintained in this area, prolonging hostilities without major victory before later campaigns. Repulsed at Höchst on 11–12 October 1795, the French abandoned the east bank of the Rhine; Jourdan convened a council of war ordering general retreat.
