1690 – 1693
From the first clashes in 1690 to the final fighting in 1693, find the full chronology of this conflict below, with the forces engaged, commanders and consequences for France in each battle.
Era : Classical Era
French victory on 1 July 1690 at Fleurus: the Duke of Luxembourg defeated Waldeck and a European coalition through a double envelopment supported by cavalry. One of the bloodiest battles of the campaign, it strengthened French dominance in the Spanish Netherlands and the marshal's prestige.
French victory on 18 August 1690 at Staffarda (Piedmont): Catinat defeated Victor Amadeus II who had attacked prematurely with the Spanish. French dragoons forced the farm defences, the second line shattered the Savoyard centre, and the French occupied Savigliano and Saluzzo.
From 29 May to 4 June 1692 off La Hougue in Normandy, the Anglo-Dutch fleet of Russell and Philips destroyed twelve French ships stranded after the Battle of Barfleur. Tourville, who had fought valiantly against a superior fleet, could not prevent systematic burning of French ships at low tide. Defeat ended the invasion attempt on England and durably weakened Louis XIV's navy.
The French fleet intercepts a large Anglo-Dutch merchant convoy near the Portuguese coast. Tourville wins a decisive victory, seizing or destroying a massive portion of enemy maritime commerce.
Landau, a strategic Rhine fortress, is besieged for nearly four months. Thanks to Vauban's modern siege methods, the Imperial garrison capitulates despite a fierce defense.
On 4 October 1693 at Marsaglia in Piedmont, Marshal Catinat won a brilliant victory over troops of Duke Victor Amadeus II of Savoy and his Austrian ally Prince of Commercy. French cavalry charges broke Savoyard lines; about 10,000 men were killed or captured on the allied side. The battle consolidated French control of Piedmont during the Nine Years' War.
On 29 July 1693, at Neerwinden (or Landen), Marshal Luxembourg inflicted a heavy defeat on William III's Anglo-Austrian army, which recrossed the Petite Gette in disorder after some of the century's bloodiest fighting.
