Air Raid on Stuttgart
Summary
One of the first deep French strategic raids against a German industrial city. Targeting Stuttgart's railway infrastructure and armament factories, the raid marked an evolution in French aviation employment beyond the front.
Historical context
In 1917, French headquarters developed strategic bombing missions inspired by Italian and British doctrines. The Stuttgart raid was one of the deepest ever conducted to that point, supported by specialized Breguet 14 squadrons. The objective was to reach German industrial production inside the territory.
Tactics
The raid was conducted at night, at high altitude, with diversion routes. Breguet 14s dropped bombs on planned targets despite reinforced anti-aircraft defence and capricious weather. Some aircraft were intercepted on return by fighters based near Mannheim.
Consequences
Though physical damage was limited, this raid demonstrated capacity to strike deep inside German territory. It encouraged development of French strategic aviation and reinforced coordination with the British on industrial war objectives.
