Operation Pierres Précieuses
Summary
A large-scale operation to eradicate the FLN maquis in Kabylia, mobilizing armor, aviation, and heliborne troops. Several camps and caches were destroyed, heavy losses inflicted on the enemy, but the Kabyle guerrilla retained part of its capacity for action.
Historical context
This operation was part of the Challe Plan, which aimed to break the active wilayas of Algeria before any political solution. Kabylia is a historic stronghold of Algerian nationalism and resisted military pressure.
Tactics
Massive encirclement, coordinated heliborne insertions, sweeps in the mountains and forests, air strikes on FLN groupings. The rugged terrain and enemy mobility complicated total annihilation.
Consequences
A tactical success with the capture and destruction of numerous FLN groups, but the ALN retained a clandestine structure and the war continued. Fatigue set in within the French army, and military operations struggled to achieve a decisive victory.
