Battle of N'Djamena

From February to March 1979, the Chadian capital became the scene of violent clashes between the government and several rebel factions, supported or monitored by France. French troops, present under defense agreements, intervened to protect foreign nationals, hold the airport, and organize humanitarian corridors, but also found themselves caught up in the urban fighting.

Chad, plunged into civil war, saw its capital turn into a battlefield. France played a key role in supporting the N'Djamena regime, while trying to limit its direct involvement in the inter-factional struggle.

Defense of key points (airport, diplomatic districts), convoy escorts, occasional air support, evacuation of civilians, exchanges of fire with armed groups. The fighting was marked by urban anarchy and abuses against civilians.

A failure to achieve immediate stability, but the French presence in Chad was maintained. The operations opened a long period of ad hoc interventions and military support that would mark Franco-Chadian history into the twenty-first century.
