Summary

The last British stronghold after French victories in Newfoundland, Carbonear resists d'Iberville. The inhabitants take refuge on the neighboring fortified island, out of reach of the assailants. The village is burned, but the fort remains unconquered.

Historical context

After taking St. John's, d'Iberville attempts to eliminate all British presence in eastern Newfoundland. Fort Carbonear is well prepared and withstands the winter attack.

Tactics

Destruction of dwellings and resources, but inability to force passage to the island fortress without heavy artillery.

Consequences

The local population survives, which allows the English colony to revive after 1697. Marks the end of d'Iberville's winter campaign.
