Battle of Izmail

Contemporary Era French victory
Historical significance:

Summary

In April 1919, French troops and their Greek allies, established at Izmail, were attacked by Soviet forces attempting to regain control of the lower Danube. The French navy, deployed on the river, played a decisive role in supporting land defences. After three days of fighting, the Soviets were repulsed, marking one of the rare French victories in this region during the Russian intervention.

Historical context

The town of Izmail, a former Ottoman then Russian stronghold, had been occupied since 1918 by French and Greek troops, within the framework of support for Romanians and White Russians against the Bolsheviks. Its strategic position on the Danube, near the Black Sea, made it a priority objective for the Red Army. The latter attempted to break through Allied lines in southern Bessarabia in order to cut river communications and extend its control over the region. The attack on Izmail formed part of this Bolshevik strategy of expansion in the Balkans.

Tactics

The Soviets engaged a coordinated night attack from the east bank of the Danube, combining artillery fire and crossings in light craft. The defence was organised around coastal batteries and river barriers. French armoured launches conducted offensive patrols on the river to prevent any landing. Fighting was bitter in the suburbs of the town. Thanks to a counter-attack led by Greek forces and intense naval support, the lines were held and the enemy was forced to withdraw.

Consequences

This victory temporarily strengthened the Allied position on the Danube and delayed the collapse of the southern front. It demonstrated the effectiveness of Franco-Greek naval-river cooperation. However, it was insufficient to reverse the general trend, marked by continuous loss of ground. It had above all symbolic value for France, demonstrating that battles could still be won in a context of overall failure of the intervention. Militarily, the battle assured a few weeks of respite for the French presence in Bessarabia.
